Meets 101

  1. Registering Early – take advantage of early registration. Once the early bird expires, you miss an amazing opportunity. Be sure to signup on the SSO (Speed Skating Ontario) page for the newsletter to keep abreast of upcoming events. Registration is most often done through the link in the “Meeting Announcement”. If the Meet requests a Club registration, we will gather interested parties together and signup as a group – consult emails, Whatsapp, and members for details as the day of registration approaches. Visit here for a list of upcoming Meets: https://www.ontariospeedskating.ca/competitions and pick the respective meet type i.e Regional Meets.
  2. Navigating the speeadsheet (Meet Schedule)…
    • An event is divided into a number of Races throughout the day (and assigned a number) i.e. 200 m sprint (1, 2, 3..), Relay (34), etc
    • Each Race is divided into letter groups (since only a minimum number of racers can be on at a the same time)
    • You will be initially provided with a spreadsheet that divides the groups (A through Z) for your race
    • Make sure to note which group your skater is assigned
    • Once the race is complete, a new assignment will be assigned back to the spreadsheet
  3. What to anticipate; follow ups will come by WhatsApp (next up, grouping), the total time, Medals and certificates
  4. A Club Coach is always present at events
  5. Coaches will time your skaters during practice, if you require a time reading, please be sure to reach to your skater’s coach prior to registering
  6. Bring snacks – Meets are all-day events (2 days sometimes for Elite events), you need snacks between group queues and patience. Some arenas are colder than others, bring warm blankets, jackets, mitts, hat, and a change of clothes (layers are good).
  7. Don’t forget to bring your registration material, meet schedule, snacks, equipment, helmet covers, guards, etc.
  8. *** IMPORTANT: A glasses safety band is required so your glasses do not slip off, this is a requirement
