Q: What is a meet?
A: A Meet is a Speed Skating Competition event held seasonally across Ontario. This is where your skater gets to show spirit and competitive edge. Come one , come all, there is always an event to fit your skater. The Regional events are for beginners and casual skaters, typically targeted for 6 to 9 yrs (loosely recommended), but flexible to any beginner. Provisional events are targeted for 9+ yrs, but qualification is based on participation so building your time and abilities will promote you. Elite events are qualified by certain time standards and you must be atleast 13 yrs of age. Visit our Competition/Meets page for details for more details.
Q: Where do I find a list of Competitions/Meets?
A: A list of competitions is held on the Speed Skating Ontario website at the following location: https://www.ontariospeedskating.ca/competitions, here you click the Meet type and refer to the list i.e. Regional Meets. On each of the meets, if the Meet has been announced and the registration is open, you will see a link available “Meet Announcement”. You should also receive an email from the club as time approaches, but just in case this is pushed to spam, we recommend that you check the list prior to get a sense of what is about to come and then also check your spam folder to unblock them. In the Meet Announcement, you will see details of location, time, schedule, size, payment details, supplemental requirements/paperwork, and the sign-up link/requirements.
Q: How do I sign-up for a Meet?
A: Either from the Speed Skating Ontario website at the following location: https://www.ontariospeedskating.ca/competitions, locate the Meet type and find the Meet Announcement link or open the email announcement from the club announcement this Meet. In the Meet Announcement, you will see details of location, time, schedule, size, payment details, supplemental requirements/paperwork, and the sign-up link/requirements. If the sign-up is direct, there will be a link with requirements listed along with it (i.e. requires speed time for 200m – this you will need from the coach if such a requirement is requested). If the sign-up is “One Club spreadsheet”, then you need to contact our members, you will most likely be provided a Google form to gather participants.
Q: Why do we pay to SSO and SSC and why do I need to register with them?
A: This is your membership, license, and insurance fees with the governing bodies for the Cambridge Speed Skating club – SSO (Speed Skating Ontario) and their governing body SSC (Speed Skating Canada). SSO will also provide you offers for Meets (paid separately) and your membership type allows for this. Once you register, you will see your SSO membership member number and license under the IceReg receipt page. For more information refer here:
